FAQs

What is the Calistoga Farmers’ Market?

The Calistoga Farmers’ Market is a collaboration between its vendors and loyal shoppers. The market’s mission is to support local farmers and provide a place for the community and seasonal visitors to purchase sustainably grown produce, specialty food and artisan goods direct from the source. Educating the consumer, preserving the environment and providing a place for non-profits to promote their causes are key objectives of the market.

Who operates the Calistoga Farmers’ Market?

The Calistoga Farmers’ Market operates under auspices of the Calistoga Chamber of Commerce, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization. The Market is operated by a market manager and an assistant and is overseen by a volunteer advisory board from the community. Current information about the Market can be obtained at the Breakfast Booth.

Where is the Calistoga Farmers’ Market located and what mode of transportation can be used to reach it?

The Calistoga Farmers’ Market is located at the Sharpsteen Plaza on Washington Street in front of the City Hall in downtown Calistoga. The Market can be reached by car, bicycle from the local lodging places, or by bus (Vine 10). Market signs posted at key intersections in town indicate Market location.

My organization would like to have a table at the Farmer’s Market. How can I arrange this?

We are pleased to welcome 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations to our vendor mix at the Calistoga Farmers’ Market. However, due to limited space availability, the Calistoga Farmers’ Market is not accepting non-profit group applications for review at this time. Only past pre-approved non-profit groups may be considered.

Please check the Calistoga Farmers’ Market FAQ’s as changes to this policy may occur periodically.

What are Certified Farmers’ Markets and Certified Vendors? Is the Calistoga Farmer’s Market a certified market?

Certified Farmers' Markets” and “Certified Producers” are approved and regulated by State of California law.  A Certified Farmers' Market is a location, certified by the Agricultural Commissioner, where a producer sells only their own fruits and vegetables directly to consumers.

Yes, the Calistoga Farmers’ Market is a Certified Farmers’ Market.

Do I need to bring my own bag to the Calistoga Farmers’ Market?

California now has the nation’s first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags. There is an exemption for produce bags, which farmers may provide, however, you will need to bring your own bags to carry your items. Baskets and re-usable totes are also available for purchase. These items will hold your purchases for years to come.

What will I find at the Calistoga Farmers’ Market?

Depending on when you visit, you will find a variety of seasonal certified organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables, farm eggs, nuts, cheese, meats, chickens, and fresh flowers. Some vendors offer locally made crafts of original, unique design such as leather items, repurposed wood, one of a kind painted rocks, lapidary, and silversmith items. Others offer prepared foods such as tamales or baked goods. We also have a fresh seafood vendor to complement the agricultural products for sale.

When is the Calistoga Farmers’ Market open?

The Calistoga Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday, year round, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., rain or shine.

Do the vendors only accept cash?

Cash is the primary method of payment at the market. However, some vendors do accept credit cards and local checks. Some food vendors also honor WIC and EBT. Information is available at the market manager’s table.

Why should I shop at the Calistoga Farmers’ Market when my supermarket sells organic produce, some of it local?

Shopping at a farmers’ market benefits vendors because they receive a retail price rather than a wholesale price. Shoppers have access to many heirloom produce varieties and opportunities to build relationships with growers who can advise about selecting, storing and cooking what they grow. At a farmers’ market, you can often taste before you buy, so you can purchase produce at peak ripeness. What’s more, produce at the farmers’ market is often picked the day before, so you have access to foods at their freshest.

The Calistoga Farmers’ Market is a community experience, where you can meet neighbors, friends and farmers, enjoy a cup of coffee and a food item and enjoy the music.

How many vendors come to the Market?

While the number varies from week to week, the Calistoga Farmers’ Market expects to host an average of 24-34 vendors year round.

Where is the vendor I bought produce from last week?

While most of our vendors come each week, some come only on certain days, some vendors are seasonal. Please visit the Vendors listed on our website or ask the market manager if you are looking for a specific vendor.

Why aren’t dogs allowed at the Farmers’ Market?

California Health & Safety Code 114259.5 stipulates that live animals aren’t allowed where food is stored or held for sale at certified farmers’ markets. Service dogs are welcome, but pets are not allowed at any farmers’ market. Please leave your pet at home or at a safe place outside of the market.

I’ve lost something at the Market.

Please contact market manager Karen Verzosa at calistogafarmersmarket@ymail.com or inquire at the Breakfast Booth upon your next visit. Check with the Calistoga Police Department right next door as lost items may have been turned in there.

Where do I park?

Free street parking is available on Washington Street and throughout the neighborhood. There is also a free parking lot south of Lincoln Ave., between Brannan’s Grill and the Calistoga Post Office. Consider riding your bicycle to the market. Bike racks are available in the market area and in some city areas.
